Starting this May, 22, 000 frontline Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) officers will be fitted with body cameras to film and record encounters with the public. That is just under the total number of MPS Constables. Body-worn video (BWV) is not new for some officers. A few units already use BWV, including forces outside London.

Body cameras are not new to the public. The London Policing Ethics Panel recommend, “the roll-out of BWV should be accompanied by a strong public information programme to explain […] why and how the new technology is being introduced,” and to emphasise that BWV benefits not just the police “but also the public.” Importantly, one of the purposes of BWV is to provide evidence in complaint investigations against the police.

It is hoped BWV footage will determine the events of lethal force, such as police shootings and killings, to avoid controversy leading to riots…
