I thought convicted sex-offender parcel courier was going to rape me

Disabled woman tells of unvetted delivery man who exposed himself to her after being convicted for a similar offence and being placed on the sex offenders register for seven years.

A DISABLED woman targeted in her home in the run-up to Christmas by a sex-offender working as a courier says the ordeal has left her feeling afraid and suicidal.

The mother-of-one from Glengormley, Co Antrim, who does not want to be identified but is speaking out to warn other women, gave evidence against James Rankin in court. The 37-year-old, who uses crutches and a wheelchair, said she was “petrified” after the episode involving Rankin (38), of Mayo Street, Belfast. “I thought I was going to be raped,” she said. Rankin called to her home on December 9 to ask her to sign for a neighbour’s parcel. He called again the following day, this time with a delivery for her – a Christmas present for her young son. Rankin asked to use the bathroom, which is clearly been adapted for a disabled householder. She said he could. Shortly afterwards Rankin, in a state of undress, twice confronted her and made sexual remarks. “I said, “Would you pull your trousers up?” the woman said. “He brushed past me. I tried to keep calm.” 382878_573092162717796_1795125736_nW en Rankin left the woman called police. They arrested him and charged him with exposure. His arrrest came months after he had been given a six-month suspended jail sentence and put on the sex offenders register for seven years. In that case Rankin had pleaded guilty to one charge of exposing himself to a woman in a Belfast park. He performed a sex act in front of her. The court also heard that Rankin had a conviction for an attempted sexual assault. District Judge Amanda Henderson told him he was “fast becoming a public nuisance”. Rankin’s latest victim said she hoped he would be jailed at his sentencing on October 23. He pleaded not guilty when he appeared before Belfast Magistrates Court last month but was convicted. His victim said she experienced a breakdown and was struggling to get on with her life. She urged women to be “really wary of this man”. A Yodel spokeswoman said Rankin was “removed” from the company after the incident. She said Yodel has since “reviewed and tightened” security procedures. “We offer the victim of this case our sincere apologies,” she said. “The safety and wellbeing of everyone who comes into contact with our workforce is of paramount importance to Yodel. Regrettably Rankin had only been with us a few days and we were not aware of his previous criminal record.”
