WE REMEMBER A DEVOTED DISCIPLE

St Patrick‘s life is worth celebrating – because he never  gave up on god.

IT’s hard to sseparate fact from fiction in the life of St Patrick. But we do know he had to make hard choices.

He came from a religious family that taught him never to give up on god, especially in difficult times. Even though he was badly treated by the Irish when he was taken here as a slave, he listened to God‘s voice calling him back and save those people from their own worst evils. When he responded to God’s call, God blessed his life and his work. That’s why hundreds of years later we are celebrating his national feast yesterday. Earlier this week I was reminded of Thomas Merton‘s wonderful prayer of acceptance which Patrick could have prayed in those dark dark days.

Perhaps if Thomas Merton’s prayer had been available to him he might not have prayed ” one hundreded times a day.” As Merton knew so well we have a journey through life trusting in God. Even though we don’t know where he was going , God always walks with us to a good place. ” My Lord God, I have no idea where I am giong, I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end.

DESIRE

Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am Following Your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the drsire to please You does in fact please You. And I hope that I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this, You will lead me by the right road, Though I may know nothing about it. Therefore I will trust You always through I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for You are ever with me, And You will never leave me to face my perils alone.”  ( Thoughts in Solitude )

St Patrick’s Breastplate is one of the most beautiful and spirtual prayers in Celtic spirtuality. It’s a good day to remember it :

” I bind myself today The power of God to hold and lead His eye to watch, His might to stay, His ear to hark unto my need : The wisdom of my God to teach His hand to guide, His shield to ward ; The Word of God to give me speech, His heavenly host to be my guard.

Christ be with me, Christ before me

Christ behind me, Christ deep within me,

Christ below me, Christ above me,

Christ at my right hand, Christ at my left hand,

Christ as I lie down, Christ as I arise.

Christ as I stand,

Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me

Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks to me

Christ in every eye that sees me

Christ in every ear that hears me.”
