Ard fheis stetement contradicts Martin’s IRA claim

This letter appeared in the Irish News on Thursday April 18 2013

IN COMPLAINING that he does not know most of those attending events oorganised by Republicans (or ‘dissidents’, as he calls them), Martin McGuinness has unwittingly exposed the mendacity of his own distortion of the historical record.

224148_171130512945212_100001447927151_419384_365475_a

On Friday night he told the Sinn Fein ard fheis : ” Every now and again you’ll see these so-called republicans parading…. And I look and I see these 50-year-olds, and I see these 40-year-olds…. and I don’t recoginise most of them. You know what I wonder ? I wonder where they were when there was a war.”

This statement clearly contradicts McGuinness’s claim, made under oath during the Saville inquirythat he resigned from the IRA in 1974. Given that it is a secret orgnisation one wonders how he could have known the identies of “many” of those involved in the IRA’s “war” subsequent to his own apparent departure from it. If he is so certain that these people aged in their forties and fifties were never in the IRA we can assume that he must have been a member during the peroid when they should also have been.

Anyone who is 50 years old today would have been a child in 1974, aged 11. Since the IRA did not swear in members until they reached the age of 17, they could not have joined it until January 1980. Likewise, a 45-year-old would not have been considered for membership until 1985 and a 40-yyear old until 1990. In claiming not to recognise republicans of these ages who could who could have participated in the IRA’s “war” Martin McGuinness is now contradicting his sworn statement that he left the organisation in 1974.

It will be interesting to see whether McGuinness will be asked to clarify the very obvious tension between these claims, or whether he will be allowed to continue to manipulate the historical record for his own purposes. Given that one Derry republican was jailed for refusing to participate in the SaSeville inquiry, McGuinness’s words on this matter are of profound public iinterest.

With many thanks to : Michael Donnelly, Derry City

The Prison authorities’ stance on compassionate leave for Republican Prisoners must be challenged.

INTERNED WITHOUT TRIAL

INTERNED WITHOUT TRIAL

Statement from the Charlie Agnew Cumann, Republican Sinn Féin, Armagh City

Republican Prisoners have a long history of honouring their word when on compassionate leave. The current British administration seems intent on punishing Republican prisoners during the most difficult and vulnerable time they can go through” according to a statement from the Charlie Agnew Cumann, Republican Sinn Féin, Armagh City, on June 1, 2012.

“Republican prisoners who are currently incarcerated in Maghaberry prison are enduring the most horrendous conditions and barbarity at the hands of the British administration, propped up by all the politicos in Stormont. The prisoners have to go through invasive strip searching; controlled movement is imposed on Republican landings and free association completely removed.

“Life as a Republican prisoner is one of hardship and daily challenges. Due to the inhumane conditions, the Republican prisoners have been on a no wash protest to try and end the unacceptable conditions. Now it would seem Republican prisoners are facing the refusal of compassionate parole as a means to punish them for their political beliefs and protest.

“In January 2012, protesting POW Damien McKenna was refused compassionate parole to attend his father’s funeral with no recourse to appeal the decision. The decision was engineered to be made after 4pm which meant the High court was finished for the day meaning the prison authorities decision was final. This Machiavellian behaviour in itself is unjust and must be challenged.

“In May 2012, Political Hostage Martin Corey applied for compassionate parole only to be passed from pillar to post for two full days before a decision was made. Finally a decision to allow release for one and a half hours was given 15 minutes before the funeral was due to start for his brother who had died.

“His conditions where deplorable. He was only allowed to the funeral Mass, he arrived at 1pm and had to be back in Jail for 3pm, the jail being more than a half and hours drive, in total he was only allowed with his family to grief for a short period.

“The issue of compassionate parole is an emotive one. Republican prisoners have always honoured their word and the British state, at various times, have always denied leave as a form of punishment.

“We the Republican people must now take this issue to our hearts, we must campaign for better compassionate parole conditions for prisoners and for the refusal of compassionate parole to cease.

“Along with this we must continue in our fight to secure Political status for prisoners and demand that Political hostages Martin Corey and Marian Price are released immediately”, the statement concluded.

British Security Forces harass Scottish and English solidarity with Irish Republican Prisoners

The Glasgow Defence Campaign is reproducing a statement from members of the 32 County Sovereignty Movement (32CSM) based in Britain, The Gaughan/Stagg Cumann, following the mass detention of their members at English and Scottish ports on the evening of 27 and morning of 28 May 2012. The GDC sends it solidarity to the comrades and would like to state our opposition to this harassment, the ongoing abuse and imprisonment of Irish Republicans, such as Marian Price, and indeed the British Imperialist occupation of the North of Ireland itself.

Free Marian Price Now!
Defend the right to protest!
Public Statement
The Gaughan/Stagg Cumann condemn the mass arrest of its members, while traveling back from Belfast for the Free Marian Price march. The arrest covered ports in England and Scotlandin what was a planned operation involving in excess of fifteen security officers which included MI5.

Our members were approached by officers who identified themselves as Special Branch and M15; some members were detained from three to eight hours. Two members were subject to cavity searches; all were asked questions about the 32CSM in England and the names of members. Some members were presented with historical information regarding their contact with Irish POW’s in an attempt to give the illusion of an investigation into that person’s background. Our members have been issued with the details of legal representatives to record this blatant harassment and protect themselves against any further unwanted approaches. Republicans and their families should remain vigilant given the resources that the British stateare willing to deploy. The Gaughan/Stagg Cumann condemn this incident and would like to state that these dirty tactics adopted by the British security services will not deter us in Scotland, England, Ireland or anywhere else for that matter from highlighting the plight of Republicanprisoners. We will continue our campaign to promote our lawful, peaceful challenge to Britain’s ongoing denial of Irish National Sovereignty. We also urge all Cumann to report these approaches to their Cumann and a legal representative.

He was involved in the Republican Movement from a very young age, first in Fianna Éireann and later Óglaigh na hÉireann. In 1969 Labhras joined Saor Éire to fight English occupation in the six counties. A fluent Irish speaker, Labhras had a keen interest in the revival of all things Irish. He was murdered by MI5 agents not far from his home in June 1975. Fuair sé bás ar son Saoirse na hÉireann.
